The aim and objectives of the Gas Monitor training standard is to ensure that personnel preparing for a gas monitor role involved in providing safety watch duties by the ongoing monitoring of a hot work site and standby duties for confined space operations are equipped with the relevant knowledge to safely carry out.

  • 14. Describe the effects of pool fires and jet fires
  • 15. Describe, and explain the general operation of, a generic four channel gas monitor
  • 16. Describe the standard checks to be carried out prior to use of the gas monitor
  • 17. Describe the use of the gas detector during hot work operations and the role of the Fire Watcher
  • 18. Explain the location of the Fire Watcher, the portable Gas Monitor and the actions to take if the alarm is sounded
  • 19. Describe the sentinel type gas monitor, its required location during hot work and the alarm response actions
  • 20. Describe how consideration should be given to the wind direction and the effect of hot metal and sparks on adjacent areas
