Our H2S  Gas Safety Course prepares participants to recognize and respond appropriately to H₂S hazards in workplaces where the gas may be present. The training covers H₂S detection and monitoring, personal protective equipment (PPE), workplace ventilation, emergency communication, evacuation procedures, and appropriate first-aid response.

Participants receive practical instruction in the use of H₂S detectors and monitoring equipment, along with relevant breathing apparatus and escape equipment such as SCBA and ELSA, where included within the training scope. Practical exercises help participants understand how to identify H₂S hazards, follow established safety procedures, and respond effectively during an H₂S emergency.

The course is particularly relevant to personnel working in oil & gas, offshore, petrochemical, wastewater treatment, and other industries where H₂S exposure may be a workplace hazard.

What will I learn?

  • 1. Explain how hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is formed, where it is found, and recognize other names used to describe the gas.
  • 2. Identify the properties and characteristics of H2S, including its odor, density, and flammability.
  • 3. Understand the concept of parts per million (ppm) as a measurement parameter and its application in detecting H2S levels.
  • 4. Define occupational exposure limits for H2S and recognize factors that affect individual susceptibility to the gas.
  • 5. Describe various types of H2S detector equipment and respiratory protection devices.
  • 6. Conduct pre-use checks on personal detection devices and escape breathing apparatus (EBA).
  • 7. Operate personal H2S detection equipment, including performing functional checks and responding appropriately to alarms.
  • 8. Demonstrate the correct donning, operation, and checks of an escape breathing apparatus (EBA) with both a mask and hood, achieving this within 30 seconds.
  • 9. Connect and disconnect safely from a pressurized cascade breathing system while using a correctly donned and activated EBA.
  • 10. Apply learned skills in responding effectively to H2S alarms and emergencies, ensuring personal safety and the safety of others.
Requirements
  • Age Requirement: Participants must generally be at least 18 years old.
  • Basic Literacy: Ability to read and understand course materials and instructions in the language of instruction.
  • Medical Fitness: A medical check may be required to ensure participants are fit to use safety equipment like breathing apparatus.
  • Target Participants: Personnel working in the offshore oil and gas industry, workers on land rigs, staff in petrochemical processing plants, refineries, and wastewater treatment facilities, municipal workers such as drainage cleaners & any individuals exposed to environments where H2S gas may be encountered.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): In some cases, participants might need to bring their own PPE, depending on the training provider.
