Shoulder Breadth Measurement Training

This Product covers the correct shoulder breadth measurement of a learner. This is accepted as the anatomical dimension which imposes the biggest limit on exiting through a restricted space – the deltoids are the shoulder muscles which the width is measured from. Learners with a shoulder width greater than 55.9cm (22”) will be classified as extra broad (XBR), while those with a shoulder width of 55.9cm or less will be classed as ‘regular’. At least 30% of seats on helicopter types are suitable for XBRs but this will vary from craft to craft.

Course overview

Shoulder measurements, particularly the XBR (Extra Broad) classification, play a crucial role in safety protocols, especially in the offshore industry. Shoulder Breadth Measurement Training is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to accurately measure shoulder width in accordance with Oil and Gas UK Medical guidelines. This training and measurement is essential for professionals involved in travelling to offshore on Helicopters.

The program covers the correct identification of anatomical landmarks, specifically the acromion points on both shoulders, and demonstrates proper measurement techniques using appropriate tools such as anthropometric calipers or measuring tapes. Participants are trained to ensure consistency, accuracy, and repeatability of measurements while minimizing human error.

Through a combination of theoretical instruction and hands-on practice, trainees learn how to position the subject correctly, maintain posture alignment, and record measurements systematically. The training also emphasizes the importance of shoulder breadth data in improving comfort, safety, and performance, particularly in industries such as offshore operations, construction, and manufacturing.
