The purpose of this stage 3 competency exam is to determine if the applicant possesses the fundamental knowledge, comprehension, and practical abilities needed to carry out the duties of a rigger in a safe and efficient manner. The aim and objectives of the Stage 3 competence assessment are to establish that the candidate has the required underpinning knowledge, understanding, and practical skills to fulfill the role of Rigger safely and effectively.

Course overview

The Rigger Competence Stage 3 course is designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of rigging specialists working in offshore environments. This comprehensive training builds on the fundamentals covered in earlier stages of rigger training and prepares participants for the more complex and challenging rigging operations specific to offshore settings.

Target Group:
This course is intended for personnel who wish to become certified and competent riggers, having successfully completed
Stages 1 & 2 Rigger Training and gained sufficient relevant work experience. Stage 3 is ideal for those aiming to further develop their expertise and take on more advanced rigging tasks in offshore environments.

Participants will gain in-depth knowledge of the complexities involved in offshore rigging operations, from advanced techniques to safety protocols, and will be assessed to ensure they meet the required competence standards. Upon successful completion, individuals will be certified as fully capable riggers, ready to manage and execute challenging rigging operations with confidence and skill.

 

What will I learn?

  • I . Plan and Prepare for Lifting and Moving Loads
  • Performance Criteria:
  • 1. Identify potential hazards associated with the lifting operation.
  • 2. Implement control measures to address the identified hazards.
  • 3. Plan the route for lifting and moving the load to minimize risks.
  • 4. Ensure the load is accurately assessed for approximate weight, incorporating an adequate safety factor.
  • 5. Communicate, discuss, and ensure understanding of the prepared lifting plan and risk assessment with the lifting team.
  • 6. Inform relevant personnel of the lifting operation and identify any potential disruption to operations.
  • 7. Obtain the resources identified in the lifting plan required to move the load, following relevant rigging loft procedures.
  • 8. Ensure the lifting equipment and accessories are free of obvious defects.
  • 9. Carry out pre-use inspection of lifting equipment and accessories.
  • 10. Prepare the load according to the specified requirements of the lifting plan.
  • 11 . Protect the load from possible damage during the lifting operation.
  • II. Plan and Prepare for Lifting and Moving Loads: Underpinning Knowledge and Understanding Criteria
  • 1.Employer’s responsibilities under Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations.
  • 2. The hazards associated with a lifting operation.
  • 3. Approved procedures and practices in the context of the operations, the work activity, and the workplace.
  • 4. The relevant roles of personnel involved in lifting operations and typical reporting lines.
  • 5. Load movement route planning methods and techniques.
  • 6. Rigging principles, SWL, WLL, and angles of lift.
  • III. Lifting, Moving, Lowering, and Landing of a Load: Performance Criteria
  • 1. Give clear instructions to the lifting team before and during the movement of the load.
  • 2. Apply force/tension progressively to the load via the attached lifting equipment until the weight of the load is fully taken up.
  • 3. Confirm the load security before raising it to the minimum height required for moving.
  • 4. Maintain load security and stability throughout the transportation of the load.
  • 5. Take adequate precautions to maintain the safety of personnel and surroundings during the moving of the load.
  • IV. Lifting, Moving, Lowering, and Landing of a Load: Underpinning Knowledge and Understanding Criteria
  • 1. The capabilities and limitations of lifting equipment and lifting accessories.
  • 2. Post-use inspections of lifting equipment and lifting accessories.
Requirements
  • A valid, approved Stage 1 Rigger Training Certificate ; and
  • A fully completed and valid logbook, based on the Stage 2 Rigger Standard workplace requirements; or
  • A formal letter from the candidate’s employer or senior employer representative, stating that the candidate has met the equivalent of the Stage 2 lifting experience logbook criteria, as outlined in Appendix 1 of this standard. The formal letter should include the position of the employer/senior employer representative within the company, full contact details, and must be signed and dated by the employer/senior employer representative.
